About me

Sonel Cutler is a fourth-year journalism and political science combined major at Northeastern University, currently based in Washington, D.C. Sonel has experience reporting on metro news as a correspondent for the Boston Globe, and on university happenings as the campus editor of The Huntington News. She is especially passionate about covering K-12 and higher education, politics and policy.

Sonel recently worked as a reporting intern for the Chronicle of Higher Education, where she reported on trends and issues at colleges and universities nationally. She's covered finance in higher ed including budget issues and state funding, as well as pop culture and artificial intelligence. She previously spent a semester working full time for the Boston Globe as a Metro desk co-op, writing half a dozen front page stories on topics including fatal police shootings and climate change. 

 

She also currently serves as the Editor-in-Chief of The Huntington News, Northeastern's only independent student Newspaper.  In this role, she manages all editorial and business operations and oversees a staff and editorial board of 80 students. She previously worked as the paper's Campus Editor from December 2022- January 2024, spearheading coverage of important issues on campus including housing, accessibility, dining, and labor organizing. She has written for The News' campus section for 5 semesters and has acted as Deputy Campus Editor for two semesters from Dec 2021-Dec 2022.

Sonel is a recipient of the New England Newspaper and Press Association's 2024 Journalism Education Foundation of New England scholarship. In October 2024, she was selected as a student fellow for the New England First Amendment Coalition's Gloria L. Negri Institute and Attended multi-day, attended an intensive training program on freedom of information law and investigative reporting techniques.

As editor in chief of her high school yearbook, Sonel achieved national recognition for her work, including awards for Editorial Leadership as well as design from the National Scholastic Press Association. She also led her staff to achieve an All American rating from the NSPA, the highest possible achievement in the organizations' critique service. 

 

Sonel attended the School of the New York Times and Boston University's Summer Journalism Institute, where she worked with experienced journalists and published multiple articles. As a fellow with Fairfax County Global Leaders, Sonel also presented well researched questions to prominent leaders including Senator Time Kaine, Ambassador Samantha Powers, Peter Baker, and Fiona Hill.  

 

In her free time, she helps input votes on election nights for the Associated Press as a vote entry operator, plays the flute in Northeastern's Pep Band and enjoys crossword puzzles, Tetris, baking and hiking.
